Election Returns: NEW Headlines and Open Thread

BlueNC Returns Threads:

SD's Kissell v. Hayes thread

Have your own favorite race? Start your own returns thread! Tell me about it and I'll post a link here.

(Pssst! The first thread is over here!)

3:03 - Looks like all of the state's media outlets are dead for the night and we will not get anything on NC-8 until the morning. Another note, Democrats control a majority of governors with at least 28.

2:39 - Looks like the Democrats took the Senate 51-49. Waiting for confirmation of Tester lead in Montana; Webb over 11,000 ahead in Virginia.

2:20 - No word out of Biscoe yet. There should be at least something tonight, if only a time to go to bed statement.

1:26 - Democrats officially keep significant margins in NC House and Senate. [Targator]

12:30 - Kissell/Hayes Margin Within 500 Votes and 1% — Recount Time? Provisional ballots to be counted.

10:57 - Black in Back

10:55 - IT'S SHULER!! Kissell Closing on Hayes

10:36 - Union County Approves School Bonds

10:15 - VA: Webb v. Allen Headed for a Recount?

10:02 - From NCDP HQ: Etheridge - "Dems Will Retake House Tonight" — Jerry Meek calling for a sweep of the state and the nation.

9:40 - Black's Back? — how is a body ever to know what to think!

9:37 - Wake School Bonds Looking Like Winners

9:28 - Bye-Bye Black?

9:18 - Harry Reid Thanks the Netroots

9:16 - State Races Update

9:12 - FL Rid of Katherine Harris; PA Washes Itself of Santorum - Congress just got a lot less yucky.

9:03 - GOP "In For A Long Night" with Yarmuth over Northrop in KY-3? - this was not a race the GOP was expecting to lose.

8:53 - Britney Drops K-Fed Like a Corrupt Congressman

8:48 - Nifong Wins - Durham's embattled DA survives the Duke lacrosse case.

8:44 - NYTimes: Butterfield, McIntyre, Myrick, Price, Coble, Watt Winners - these are not the races that have been keeping us up at night.

8:39 - Charlotte: Streets, no; housing and neighborhoods, yes. - Bonds, yo.

8:36 - Ohio Still Not So Good at Running Elections

8:21 - Meck Board of Elections Server Down

7:57 - Dude smashes a Diebold machine - in PA.

7:36 - Some Durham results will be late - because some stations opened late.

7:32 - Exit Poll Analysis a la Citizen-Times

7:01 - State GOP Chairman Blount Resigns - seems he wants to run for office.

What's the BlueNC election night plan?

Everybody dried off and warmed up? As the night progresses, I'll be posting headlines in this space and links to news here at BlueNC and elsewhere. I'll keep this post updated as frequently as I can, but I won't be going into much depth here.

In the box to the right, entitled "BlueNC Returns Threads," I'll provide links to BlueNC threads focused on specific topics: NC-11, NC-08, state races, national news, etc. These will stay on top, so that you can stay on top of the news. And, of course, the BlueNC community will be keeping it live in blog posts and comments.

One more thing: because we're spreading this out over a few threads, you may find the Tracker useful. Logged-in users who click the "track changes" link (in the blue banner at the top of the page) will see a list of threads with the most-recently-updated at the top and a column showing how many comments are new to you on each thread. Reloading the Tracker page is a good way for members to stay on top of comments and updates. (And if you're not a member, why not? It's free, for Pete's sake!)

I'll be back with headlines as they start coming in.

Where?

I'm on WRAL and they're still showing 97%

Hey Thomas.

Glad to see you chiming in.

I know you have to be disappointed that Weber didn't get the support he should have. I am too. Next time, it's take no prisoners in all districts.

Thank you for all you've done.

-A-

It happens. Without DNC, DCCC and NCDP support, there's no way to win a district, especially the deeply red NC-3.

To right this, I'm writing the new plan.

Later today I'm registering as a Democrat (yes, I'm an Independent). I'm writing some scathing letters to the editor regarding the lack of local, state and national Democrat support in NC-03. I'll be tossing some big stones, but I'll be tossing from the inside of the house .

It's time for a new breed of Onslow County Democrat and I'm leading the charge and I'll need all the BlueNCer (Blinker?) support I can get.

Thanks, in advance, for your support. :)

Thomas

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?

That's right, blinker

Like when you're making a left turn. :)

You've got it, Thomas.

As I look at the Congressional races, the three that got traction in the blogosphere ... Shuler, Kissell and (late in the game) Sharpe are the ones that ignited. I'm not saying blogs "caused" those campaigns to build momentum, but I know we made a difference.

Next time we need to get organized earlier and more powerfully for a full-court netroots press. And I suspect future candidates will follow the lead of Larry, Brad, Heath and Roger by engaging proactively with us.

In the days ahead, we should all do a serious post-mortem to try to understand the level of impact we had here in NC. On fundraising, on momentum, on LTEs, on the ground game, on whatever elements we can think of.

So I'm with you 100%.

Black down, Wake Dems up

N&O, CO and Wake BOE not reporting Wake State seats but WRAL has them:

H-41
J. Russell Capps (i) (R) 11,731 48%
Ty Harrell (D) 12,627 52%
Precincts Reporting - 94%

H-36
Nelson Dollar (i) (R) 10,256 49%

H-37
Paul Stam (i) (R) 14,010 51%

and..........

H-100
Jim Black (i) (D) 4,625 49%
Hal Jordan (R) 4,737 51%
Precincts Reporting - 95%

Goddamn O-No

Endorsed Stam over Ridpath. That might have been the difference.

Looks like we won't have Black to kick around anymore.

O-Yes

With Stam suing municipalities over impact fees and with Certificates of Participation being challenged in the courts by NC Institute for Constitutional Law headed by Bill Graham and Art Pope local governments will have strong tides to swim against until 2008.

Black by 7 votes, Capps goes down

What the crap?

MSNBC sez:

Robin Hayes (REP)* 60,500 50%
Larry Kissell (DEM) 60,032 50%

With 100% reporting. 468 votes is definitely recount territory. It ain't over yet!

What does NC law say?

Everyone's talking about the virginia senate race being in the recount threshold for their law....does anyone know what NC law says?

1%

There's a comment on this with a link to the code section somewhere in tonight's discussions.

Damn right it ain't over.

Sure hope someone is keeping an eye on dirty trick. I don't trust Flipper for one damn second.

Recount law

Sec 163-182.7

Mandatory recount for non-statewide races closer than 1%.

This qualifies.

FYI Webb

Good news! Looks like Webb just squeezed by Allen with 100% reporting.

Webb 1,143,144 50%

Allen 1,140,879 49%

Another recount.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Right

And Webb is currently taking Arlington 73% to 26%. Feeling good about this.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Delay that

The numbers in VA are still in flux. Not all of Arlington's precincts have reported (2% still out). That's Webb country, though, if I'm not mistaken.

Current
Webb 1,143,756 50%

Allen 1,141,030 49%

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Allen won't concede

Allen on TV won't concede Senate seat to Webb. Counting continues through night.

Waiting for Missouri

1 percenter races

just did a quick browse through the results at NYT. looking more at eastern states (higher reporting %s), I saw 6 house races within 1% (and also webb/allen)

FL-13 is the tightest at 364 votes, which works out to 0.3%, called for the reds.

CT-2 is D by 420 votes in 229k, WY-1 (Trauner) is R by 400 votes in 170k, GA-12 is D by 900 in 125k, GA-8: R by 1200 with 150k total, and there's Larry at umm, 430 with 120k votes cast.

Then Webb leads Allen by 2200 votes in 2.2 million, so thats down around 0.2% difference (49.7 to 49.5).

BBC news has this guy with a rockin scottish accent. It sounds like he's saying Daemocrat :)

Two Judicial seats in doubt

Supreme Court (Assoc. Justice Wainwright)

The rest are Bob Hunter in the COA; Martin, Timmons-Goodson, and Parker.

MO senate?

85% of precincts have reported.

McCaskill 867,295 49%

Talent 842,170 48%

Gilmour 41,710 2%

Lewis 15,722 1%

VA squeaker; MO squeaker; MT squeaker. Add those to the other three we already picked up and ... dare I say it?

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

MO Senate pick-up

CCN projects McCaskill (D) & Talent concedes

MT about to be called

MSNBC is reporting MT Gov saying Senate race will be called soon.

Looks like it

And there goes the Senate.

holy sh...

Glad the GOP doesn't build real firewalls. :)

wooooooooohhoooooooooo!

Still need a Kissell win to make it perfect, but all-in-all, it's been a good day to be a Democrat in NC ... and in the U.S. of A.
