This isn't a diary about the karmic chaos raining down on America right now. It's not even a condemnation of our current so-called leaders. Rather, it's a simple observation about the absurdity of Amy Barrett even being considered for a seat on the Supreme Court.

Here's how it breaks down:

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed more than 150 guests as the president formally introduced Judge Amy Coney Barrett, his nominee for the Supreme Court. A handful of Republican senators were there, including Mike Lee of Utah, who hugged and mingled with guests. So was Kellyanne Conway, the recently departed senior counselor to the president, as well as the Rev. John I. Jenkins, the president of the University of Notre Dame, who left his Indiana campus where a coronavirus outbreak had recently occurred to celebrate an alumna’s nomination.

Spirits were high. Finally, Trump was steering the national discussion away from the coronavirus pandemic — which had already killed more than 200,000 people in the United States and was still raging — to more favorable terrain, a possible conservative realignment of the Supreme Court.

A conservative realignment of the court? How about a dumber-than-a-box-of-rocks realignment instead. After all, we're considering a new justice who doesn't have the judgment to wear a damn mask to her own coming out party. Being a Supreme Court justice theoretically requires rational thought. Anyone who decides not to wear a mask at public events dominated by anti-science Republicans is, by definition, incapable of thinking rationally.

I see two possible explanations as to why Barrett wasn't wearing a mask at her White House event. One, she doesn't accept the science surrounding the pandemic. Or two, she is so obsessed with getting on the court that she did something no justice in her right mind should do: she put her life and the lives of others at risk in favor of her own vanity. Either of those explanations should be a disqualifying error of judgment.

PS I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Amy Barrett herself is the spreader of infection. She says that she had covid earlier this year, and now says she's free of infection. Tests, presumably, show she's clean as well. But here's the problem: We don't yet know exactly how this virus spreads. We don't even know whether people who have been infected in the past still carry the virus or not. The virus appears to be mutating almost daily. We. Just. Don't. Know.

What to do in the face of such uncertainty? Err on the side of caution. Wear a goddamned mask. And yes, I'm talking to you, Ms. Holier Than Thou Barrett.

Looking like Barrett might be the vector

Unmasked at her big event with Tillis. All her kids unmasked too. No distancing. Not precautions whatsoever. Anti science. Unthinkably poor judgement.
