Lt. Governor Perdue Says "No" to Site C

Tim Crowley, communications director for Lt. Gov. Perdue, sent me an email tonight with the Lt. Governor's position on the Navy's OLF plans.

"An OLF shouldn't be forced on a community that doesn't want it. I continue to believe the Navy should find a suitable location for an OLF in our state." Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue

Lt. Gov. Perdue is the most senior state official to speak out publicly against the Navy's plans to force its way into Washington County. Her statement will be a significant boost to farmers and environmentalists concerned about the destructive impacts an OLF would have on families and communities in northeast North Carolina. People alarmed about the risk to Navy pilots of bird strikes near the Pocosin Wildlife Refuge will also welcome her statement.

FACT: With years of fighting under their belts already, the people living near the proposed landing field in Washington County clearly do not want an OLF in their community.

FACT: North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor - the woman who will very likely be next governor of our state - says the OLF shouldn't be forced on them.

FACT: The Navy has been specifically directed take seriously the positions of North Carolina's elected officials.

FACT: Other North Carolina sites are much more well suited for an OLF than Site C. People around Cherry Point, Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville are eager for the OLF to be sited in their part of the state.

This is a big and welcome announcement. Thank you, Lieutenant Governor Perdue.

They sent you an email

Is she going to be issuing the requisite press release and helping out with the effort?

Also, I am thrilled to hear about this. It makes me very happy to see her take a stand on this. It is not too late for everyone else to follow her, and those running to replace her, lead on this.

It's about time.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." - Gandhi

I can't tell you how happy I am about this.

Lt. Gov. Perdue has long been a strong supporter of the military in North Carolina. Which makes this statement all the more remarkable. The Navy's plans for Site C are misguided on every level you can imagine. Perdue is showing that an elected leader can be for a strong military without being blind to their bad judgment on a particular issue.

Rephrase please

Her strong support of the military is WHY she should be against Site C. This isnt the Navy vs the people.

This is two admirals on one side.
And, the people, property rights, the environment, and the LIVES OF OUR PILOTS on the other side.

I sat next to an Air Force colonel

coming back from DC today. He's been following the OLF very closely. He says the Navy is flat-out insane to want this site.

Way to go A!

I would have preferred a stronger statement from her.....something like this:

Those sons of beeches will put an OLF in Washington County over my dead body. I will use every resource at my disposal to fight the US Navy. Those rat fu*#ers won't know what hit them when I get through with them.....and I'm not just talking about little old electrical wires around their testicles....nuhuh, no siree....I'll make Abu Ghraib look like romper room.

I guess a candidate for governor couldn't quite go that far, though. :)

If I ever run for office

Im gonna talk that way.

My statement would have probably questioned the moral standing and possibly the manhood of both the admirals involved. Certainly would have included the words "stupid" and "criminal".

She's a tough woman and though I don't always agree with what she says, I always know where she stands. This is a clear and well-crafted statement that leaves open lots of options to support the Navy elsewhere in our state.

I know

but I still like what I said better. It isn't very diplomatic, but I bet the sailors would understand it better. heh

seriously....maybe this will start something and we'll see a whole host of officials speaking out now.

I sure hope you're right.

That's the thing about leadership. One person can move mountains. Just look at what the women at NO OLF have done.

I like

what you said better, too, SD. I think the Admirals would certainly understand it better. As would Farmer John in NC-01, Joe Jarhead in NC-03 and Jane Average in Washington County.

Here's hoping you're right and this gets the ball rolling.

Now you have done it for the NAVY.! They will have signs made up with your comment and posted on site C because the damn birds will flee after reading it.

Need Press Release

If the statement in the email on Lt. Governor Perdue’s position on the Navy OLF is true, this statement must be released to the press. The public needs to know her position.

Release to the press?

Some of the "press" reads BlueNC every day. If reporters in your area aren't reading it, send them the link to this entry. If they want to know more, they can call Tim in the LG's office.

I'm tired of waiting for the press to get on this issue.

To give equal time to Moore's POV:

This was in the News and Observer in response to the Forbes article:

Jay Reiff, Moore's political consultant, said the article failed to point out that North Carolina's pension fund has been rated as among the best-run in the country. He said Moore has followed the law in accepting contributions.

"This political hit piece by a Wall Street publication is clear evidence that Treasurer Moore has made some enemies in the financial world by calling for more accountability in America's corporate board rooms," Reiff said.

If it's true he's made enemies because he's going good things, do we want to help some furrin' New Yawkers by cannibalizing our own?

But, kudos to Bev

"Political hit piece...made some enemies..." That sounds so familiar.

Congrats to all for your hard work

and a big commendation to Lt. Gov. Perdue for taking a stand. I hope this is the beginning of the end to this insanity.

Well played!!

An excellent hard fought campaign, A. Good work.

And good good GOOD on the Lt. Gov. In my book, that's,

"Point, Perdue."

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Excellent work Anglico.

I wasn't a Bev. Perdue fan, but if she could take the leadership position by moving quickly and stop the cruelty and pain the Navy has poured on these peaceful communities, then lets dance.

So far we have Price, Butterfield, Lt. Governor Perdue. I have received a letter written to the Navy from Dole saying she too is against site C. (But where are you Ms. Liddy?) April 21, 2005 - Miller, Etheridge Join Butterfield in Request for Consideration of Alternative OLF Sites. I have spoken to Mel Watt and he gives his support against site C. The phantom Governor came to Beaufort Co. during election time and openly declared his opposition to site C. Moreover, he called for a study in 2004 with Judge Eagles presiding to discuss with the Navy about their site decisions. Study. www.noolf.com

Please Lord; give one person the courage to take up the leadership reigns. Yes, the Navy has and probably will continue to spit all over them. But, they have the power and the ability to work together to stop this travesty. North Carolinians deserve united leadership.

North Carolinians should have a voice in deciding the location of an OLF within the state’s borders. The citizens of Virginia and Florida are respected and were given the opportunity to vote for their future with resolutions. North Carolina…nothing…. All North Carolinians are permitted to do is stand by and watch as our state becomes the military’s new dumping ground and to quietly witness our rural farming and black communities become the replacement for Viques, Puerto Rico. Which by the way currently one of the worlds largest superfund’s.

I was so stoked by this

I had something else I wanted to write this morning for my democraticDiscussions listserve, but found that I HAD to send this letter to the local paper.

Let justice roll down like the waters ...

Do the people of Johnston County stand with the people of Washington County?

Do we know what's happening to our neighbors to the east?

The Navy is setting the stage for a land grab in NC. They think no one is looking. Most folks I've talked to think this issue died last year. They think the Navy gave up and went away. It didn't. It just stalled until people stopped paying attention. The Navy still wants to put a practice field a stones throw from the home of massive numbers of dog-sized flying birds.

Bird + jet = pilot and jet crashed to earth.

Not many sensible people think that equation makes much sense; for the pilots, the tax payers who pay for those million dollar jets, or the birds.

This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. It is a North Carolina issue. The folks at progressive blogs and conservative blogs, in Democratic parties and Republican parties have all written and campaigned against the bulldozing of farmers by military powers for a location that is dangerous for pilots, jets and God's creatures. It is simply criminal to take more land from more farmers to put a dangerous practice field where it will soon be abandoned due to high numbers of bird strike pilot deaths.

FYI

I heard from Crowley that this isn't an entirely new position - that the LG has said something similar last year in an interview. That doesn't much matter to me because I'm taking Perdue at her word. If the community doesn't want an OLF, it shouldn't be forced on them. It's hard to be more clear than that.

(Here's the earlier version.)

List of counties that have signed resolutions

against the OLF.....The No-OLF could have gotten more but at that time our small group was fighting so many fronts we had to move on....without a doubt we could have tripled the number. Yet we are extremely thankful for the counties that have gone to bat for us.

From what I understand

Mecklenburg was one of the most supportive counties. The No-OLF delegate who drove to Charlotte from our area to speak in front of the board of commissioners said they were fantastic.

That makes me feel good.

Please let me or Working for Change (another blueNC diarist) know if you are ever sending a delegate down this way again. We'll try to help as much as we can.

Issue for 2008 Senate Race

Elizabeth Dole, with her silence on the issue, could be gift-wrapping an issue for her eventual Democrat challenger. This would fit right in with any campaign motif about how Dole "doesn't care about North Carolina."

Dole

Not just silent . . . actually complicit. She did the deal with John Warner that breathed life into this monstrosity in the first place.

This train has left the station.

Perdue beat the buzzer, and good for her. With Easley now jumping in with both feet, this is a full-blown smackdown . . . anyone showing up now to condemn the Navy's plans is an also ran.

naaah...I'm calling BS on that

Perdue's statement is tepid at best. It lacks conviction.

Still beat the buzzer

Could have been a three pointer, but I'll take a lay-up all the same.

You're right on that one

Now that the decision is out she also might come out with a stronger statement. In teasing you (gosh that's fun!) I didn't stop to point out that a stronger statement prior to the release of the Navy's intentions (like we all doubted them anyway) could have made her look foolish. Why do you think everyone else waited?

Also, as you mentioned, this is not a new position for her. Didn't you say she came out earlier with that statement? It isn't as strong as I think it should be, but perhaps it's because she probably suspected exactly what the rest of us did - the Navy was going to do what the Navy was going to do. Why risk looking foolish?

The Navy has finally stepped over the line in the sand and the real battle has started. Supporting the military doesn't mean allowing them to run roughshod over the citizens of this state. Plain and simple.

She did come out first. Now she can afford to come out stronger.

"Keep the Faith"

You sure are in a rough mood tonight.

What's up?

A

PS NC politicians have had forever to make up their minds on this. And the absence of political leadership has been nothing short of pathetic, outside of a few key people.

Whether the "also rans" come on board or not doesn't much matter. The General Assembly will give them a chance to vote once a bill (resolution) is filed. I'm guessing it will pass hands down.

But even that resolution is only a hammer for calling on Congress to stop the Site C travesty. That's where the rubber meets the road.

eh

I understand why they should have cared more about it. And I know people have been working hard to give it their attention, but ultimately, its the constiuents that matter. I know why everyone in this state should care, but is someone like Shuler or even Price going to lose votes over this? I doubt it. Is Hayes or McHenry? Definitely not.

Having said that, I do expect my elected leaders to represent their constiuents first, but the state and the country next. I dont expect them to ignore everyone else.

Congress Can Make the Smackdown

From the Washington Times story:

"Tagged “NOLF Washington County,” the line item indicates $10,060,000 would be used for outlying-landing-field facilities and land acquisition. The appropriation request is part of the Department of Defense’s proposed budget for the coming federal fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. The proposed budget was sent to Congress earlier this month."

It's right there - probably buried in a 1,000 page document but if they know what to look for it shouldn't be hard to find.

Armor for troops? Find the money. Upgrades for their vehicles? Find the money. Here's 10 million.
